Kumiko Workshop with Matt Kenney

The Cooroora Institute is closed for a sabbatical during 2019 - however an opportunity has arisen for a class that we had hoped to offer in 2018. So, as a special one-off, we are (briefly) opening our doors to host this workshop.

In Japan, doors, windows, and room screens are often decorated with a delicate wooden framework called kumiko. The beauty of these frames is enhanced by using small pieces of wood to create geometric or floral patterns in the framework. This same technique can be used in furniture making to add a beautiful detail to a door panel, table top, or cabinet base. Kumiko panels also make eye-catching wall art.

At first glance, kumiko panels certainly give the impression that they’d be extremely difficult to make. However, they aren’t. In this class, you’ll learn how to make a square framework, and the classic asa-no-ha infill pattern. I explain how I make the joinery for the framework, and then we’ll assemble a frame. After that, you’ll learn how to create the small pieces used to make the infill pattern, and then get to work making them for your panel. At the end of the day, you’ll have a beautiful panel.

Matt Kenney is a professional box and furniture maker living in the United States. Not too long ago, he spent a year designing and making 52 unique boxes. He undertook the project as a means to improve his design skills, but found that the woodworking community at large was interested in what he was doing, and they followed along intently as he wrote about the boxes each week on his website (mekwoodworks.com). After he completed the project, he wrote a book about his experience: 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks (Taunton Press). He has been making kumiko for several years, and has been teaching others to make it as well. Matt teaches woodworking around the world, writes about the craft, and spent 10 years as an editor at Fine Woodworking magazine, where he was featured in the magazine and instructional videos, and was a co-host of the popular Shop Talk Live podcast.

Postponed - The Mitre and the Birdsbeak -Brian Reid Intensive

Sadly Brian has had to postpone his trip to the Australia

A 7 day intensive with master furniture maker Brian Reid.

Brian Reid is one of the world's best furniture makers and a great teacher. His cabinet making and decorative work is stunning. Check out some of his work and teaching on the link below.

We feel honoured to welcome Brian from USA via New Zealand to the Cooroora Institute in September. Anyone looking to advance their woodworking and furniture making to the ultimate should consider coming along to his week intensive from 24th to 30th September.

You'll be making a decorative cabinet/ wall hanging focusing particularly on three-way mitres and birdsbeak joints. But Brian's expertise and skilled teaching means you'll learn so much more to take home to your own studio practices.

Make a commitment to the finest of furniture design making and fully immerse yourself in seven days of all things wood in this beautiful environment. Highly recommended!

Many woodworkers are terrified of mitre joints, especially the three way mitres. In actuality with a few simple tricks in layout and measurement these joints are easily mastered.

The suggested project will be a wall hanging with four to nine square panels that are interchangeable to create an interactive piece of wall art.

For the more advanced students this project can be designed to be a small cabinet finished after this short class
